Boyer Wins Lady White Rose 5K

YORK, PA--The eleventh running of the Lady White Rose 5K was held April 24 on a beautiful spring morning with cool temperatures. The course is run on the streets of York and is not what one would call a PR course, but 26-year-old Vicki Boyer says that she likes the course. Boyer, an elementary-school teacher from Lancaster, won the event in 17:43. She also won the race in 1996 in a time of 17:44. Boyer's goal this year was to break the course record of 17:29, and although she missed breaking it, she said that she was satisfied with her performance and felt really strong. Finishing second in 18:19 was Theresa Brown, 31, of State College. Third overall and last year's winner was 31-year-old Susan Thomas of Phillipsburg, NJ, with a time of 18:36. The first Masters was 44-year-old Margaret Starnes of Street, MD, in 19:07. This is the fourth year in a row Starnes has won the top Masters award. She also was the fourth overall finisher.

Four new age-group records were established this year. Thirteen-year-old Laura Barshinger of Glen Rock set a new mark of 21:58, improving on her time of 23 minutes flat which she set last year in the 13-and-under category. Rebecca Page of Hershey set a new record of 20:00 in the 19-24 group and Dale Ann Heird of York ran a 20:16 to set a new record in the 40-44 bracket. That little sprite from Lancaster, Heide Moebius, set a new course record in the 60-and-over group with a fine time of 25:47. She has placed first in the 55-59 age group the last four years and having recently turned 60, she shows no signs of slowing down!

The Lady White Rose is York County's only all-female race and provides many women with a very rewarding experience. For the second consecutive year over 200 women finished the race. Entrants come from a large regional area and northern Maryland.

A special mid-pack award was presented and lots of random prizes were given. Light refreshments were served before the awards ceremony.

A very sincere "Thank You" to our sponsor, Apple Hill Podiatry Associates. We're also appreciative of the support given to us by Greg Baum of Flying Feet Sport Shoes and Moving Comfort. Thanks also to our race-day volunteers and to everyone who contributed random awards. All proceeds benefit the York YWCA.

Next year's Lady White Rose 5K is scheduled for April 29. See you there!
