WATSONTOWN, PA--The course record for the Watsontown JesVic 5K didn’t just fall on Saturday, June 6. It was crushed by the top five finishers.

The foray was led by Misha Litvinov of Drums, PA who posted 15:41 for first place and demolished the previous course record of 16:52 set by Mike Dalton, Lake Hopatcong, NJ. This year, Dalton was fourth overall with 16:20, improving his time by 32 seconds. Both have competed for Bloomsburg University, Dalton graduating this past spring and Litvinov beginning his final season this fall.

Though Litvinov was relatively unchallenged, Garth Watson, Canton, PA, who currently competes for Shippensburg University, provided the most competition coming in second place with 16:01. Joe Stanek of Ashley, PA and a runner for Mansfield University was third in 16:11. Kip Hoffman of Watsontown rounded out the top five with 16:43.

Winning overall on the women’s side was Amanda Starr of Lewisburg, PA in 19:12, missing the course record by three seconds set by Erin Fisher in 2008. Wendy Wood of McEwensville, PA was the second female in 20:05, and third was Kristin Shoop, Milton, PA in 20:33.

Despite no overall record falling, the women’s race was relatively more competitive than in 2008, with five runners under 21 minutes and 12 runners under 23 minutes as compared to three runners under 21 and six runners under 23 the year before.

The top Masters finishers were Marty Owens on the men’s side, who finished ninth overall in 17:39, and Beatriz Murray who was fourth in the women’s race with a time of 20:41. It should also be noted that Starr, the first female, was a Masters runner as well.

Winning the kids’ 1/2-mile race was Michael Muffly, 10, in 3:02. Ben Montgomery, just 6 years old, trailed by five seconds, good for second place. Cassidy Hoffman, 9, was third in 3:19.

The top girl in the kids’ race was Lauren Bleistein, 9, in 3:36. Paige Bowman, 7, was the second place girl by finishing just four seconds behind, and third went to Brady Reese, 6, in 3:45.

For the first time in three years, the race achieved more than 400 registrants, having 372 5K runners and walkers who finished and 37 participants in the kids’ 1/2-mile race. The event raised over $6700, overcoming challenging economic times that yielded higher race costs and fewer sponsorships. The proceeds were donated to local families facing disease and struggling with medical bills.

Note: The Watsontown JesVic 5K remembers two loved community women, Jessica Wade and Vicki Hitesman, who passed away from cancer between 2005 and 2006. Both were individuals who left positive impressions on others while alive, and the JesVic team hopes to touch others in the same way.
