New Venue Receives 'A-Paws" at
16th Annual Hounds and Harriers Run

BY BARBARA RUSHMAN

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ--The 16th annual Hounds and Harriers Run was held in South Mountain Reservation on October 7. The weather forecast was for showers, but the weather gods were kind and the showers held off. This is the first year at the new location and everyone approved. It is very spectator friendly. It is easy to watch the start, walk a few steps and see the runners come by the one-mile point, then see everyone at the finish line a few feet away.

The overall winner was Scott Moran (New Providence) and his partner Eli in a time of 17:28. Second place went to Brendan Brown (South Orange) and his labradoodle, Ollie (17:42). The woman’s division was won by Kristine Juhl (NYC) and her Aussie mix, Calvin in 20:44. Runner-up was Wendy Reed and her hound/beagle mix, Bernadette (East Brunswick), whose time was 21:08. One hundred and thirty runner/dog teams completed the three-mile course.

A second shorter event called the “Paws from the Past” was held for dogs that are retired from running the longer course due to age or disability. German short-haired pointer KC Brown had recently contracted degenerative myelopathy and can no longer use her back legs. She had a chance to try out her new cart in this event. All dogs that participated in this event were veterans of the three-mile run and KC is a former award winner.

This race is a favorite of all that come because there are few opportunities to run a race with your dog. Here are a few comments sent in by the participants: Jim Galbraith: “I just can’t tell you how much we love this event. You and your team do such a tremendous job. I know you had a lot of challenges this year, but I have to say that the new venue was wonderful and everything seemed to go off without a hitch.” Mara Bovsun: “What an amazing event! I cannot believe how much fun it was. Exceeded all my expectations! I have been smiling all week!” Charlie Lewis: “To make this happen just once is amazing but to do it year in year out is TRULY amazing. I speak to a lot of people at the race...while there are many common themes, one that resonates year in and year out is how special YOU are. Thank you not only for all your EFFORTS but also raising funds for yes, man’s best friend.”

The race has raised over $130,000 for animal related charities since its inception in 1997. This year the race plans to donate $10,500 to several charities, the bulk of which is earmarked for Eleventh Hour Rescue and the Canine Cancer Research Foundation. Smaller donations are planned for Homes for Good rescue group in Summit, MARDOG, and the Tails ‘n' Trails Run, which donates to Small Dog Rescue, Inc.

Twelve individuals or families donated between $100 and $500 each in memory of past pets. They include: Robin Dawson, Greg Mandak, Barb and John Rushman, Claudia and Joel Orton, Peter Hyland, Karen Fox, Michelle Kaweak, Annie Murphy, the DePiano family, Tim Hunt, Bill Winterbottom, and Wendy Reed. They received gift bags.

The grand prize was a gift basket of Life is Good merchandise, in addition to the placement prizes the other winners received: a custom designed show ribbon, donated by Morris Animal Inn, and a custom calendar with photos of last year’s Hounds and Harriers Run. In addition to 10 placement awards for men and women, awards were given to first shelter adoptee or rescued dog, first veteran dog (age 10 or over), first small, and first large dog.

The main goal of the event is to have a fun and safe event for runners and their most reliable and enthusiastic training partners, their dogs. The race prides itself on the amenities given to each participant. This included a custom T-shirt and bandanna designed by Swedish artist Eva Riise. Each entrant also received a goodie bag with gifts from Milk Bone, PETCO, Kraft Foods, Terry’s Pet Depot, Total Health, Dove, and NutriDent.

Milk Bone is the event’s main sponsor, but other contributions were made by returning sponsors NutriDent, Murray Hill Veterinary Associates, Morris Animal Inn, the Perambulating Pet Sitter, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, MARDOG, Bark Ave Mobile Pet Spa, and Camp Gone to the Dogs. New sponsors donating funds include Total Health (Florham Park), New York Foot and Ankle, Morris K9 Campus, Sneaker Factory (Millburn), Nielsen Chrysler Dodge, and Fitness One for Seniors.
