Hounds and Harriers Run
Raises Record Donation for
St Hubert's Animal Welfare Center

BY BARBARA RUSHMAN

MORRIS TOWNSHIP, NJ--The seventh annual 3-mile Hounds and Harriers Run was held in Loantaka Park on October 11. David Panush (Washington, DC) and his lab Karma won for the fourth year of the event with a time of 16:40. The women's winner was Bonnie Linton and her lab Brandie of Hackettstown in a time of 17:45, a new course record by almost 45 seconds! This was Bonnie's third consecutive win.

One hundred and thirty-five runners completed the 3-mile course on a beautiful fall day. This year, the race initiated a second event, a 200-foot sprint for dogs that are retired from running the 3-mile course. Joe and Andy Doyle of Madison have participated in all seven Hounds and Harriers Runs, this year in the Retiree Dash. Andy is 12 years old. Race director Barbara Rushman of Florham Park said these retired dogs were all very happy to participate at a level that was still fun. They got to hear their names being cheered and got a goody and a toy at the end. Barbara went on to say that her St Hubert's adopted mix Oreo donated the toys for this event. Oreo had won them at an agility match in the spring and put them away for this occasion.

The race plans to donate approximately $6,000 from the 2003 event, a $400 increase over last year and a new record. This increase was due in part to the generosity of the participants who donated money in addition to the entry fee. There were six individuals or families that donated $100 or more: Chris and Debbie Kelly, Robin and Susan Dawson, Margaret Drenchko, Bill Winterbottom, David and Lynn Lewin, and Michele Kraweak. Susan Dawson also donated handmade dog coats that were sold, raising additional funds. These donors were given gift bags of Kraft Food's products as a thank you. Other donors were given a gift of "Honey Graham Bee" stuffed animals.

The grand prize was a gift bag of goodies and toys and a $50 gift certificate from NJ Pets in East Hanover. This year David Panush deferred his 1st place gift bag to his closest competitor, 2nd place Bill Winterbottom and his lab Kate. All placement winners received a dog-bone shaped dog tin filled with treats donated by Milk Bone and a custom-designed show ribbon donated by NJ Pets. In addition to 10 placement awards for men and women, recognition was given to first shelter adoptee or rescued dog, first veteran dog (age 10 or over), and first small and large dog. Eighth place male winner John Bye just moved to Madison from Chicago this summer. The worst part for John about leaving Chicago was missing the Chicago Dog Jog. He was delighted to hear that there was a dog race near his new hometown. Race director Barbara Rushman saw John running with his lab/greyhound mix Archie one Saturday a week after his arrival and told him about the event.

The main goal of the day is to have a fun and safe event for runners and their most reliable and enthusiastic training partners--their dogs. The race prides itself on the amenities given to each participant. This included a specially designed T-shirt and bandanna. This year's design was donated by Eva Arvidsson, a Swedish artist residing in Stockholm--she enjoys doing pen and watercolors of her English Setter, Fanny, one work of which was converted for the T-shirt design. She also contributed two original pen and watercolor works of Fanny that were auctioned off at the race, raising $275 for the pair for the shelter.

Each entrant also received a goody bag with gifts from Kraft Foods and its Nabisco Division and NJ Pets. Milk Bone is the event's main sponsor but other contributions were made by Murray Hill Veterinary Associates, Perambulating Pets, Liberty Abstract title insurance company, Benefits and Premium Review, and Actively Yours, Active Wear for Less. New local contributors donating cash or goods include Happy Tails, Inc., Schnippers Gift Shop, and the Bagel Chateau. This race is one of two races put on locally by the Madison based Rose City Runners Club. The second, the Giralda Farms Run, is a people-only race and is held in Madison in November.
