Blood, Stum-Jetton Capture Top Honors
at Foran Colon Cancer 5K

BY MARJORIE LEBO

HARRISBURG, PA--The William F. Foran Colon Cancer Prevention 5K, held on June 21, 2008, continues to be the only race in the Harrisburg area to raise awareness of colorectal cancer prevention. Two-hundred-nineteen runners and walkers participated in this year’s event which was sponsored by Penn State’s Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. All proceeds will be donated to the Cancer Genetics Program at the Medical Center. This year, over $14,000 was raised to help fund research and provide colorectal cancer genetic counseling.

Leading the pack along the flat Riverfront course in 16:30 was Harrisburg Marathon record holder, Rick Blood. Coming in second was Masters standout, Tadd Morris in 16:58. The race for third was close between Tyler Erhard (17:19) and Scott Shaeffer (17:19.9).

For the women, Vicki Stum-Jetton took top honors in 18:22 followed by Wendy Barrett in 18:32. (Vicki and Wendy were high school competitors from 1986-1988 when they both competed at the State level; Vicki ran for Cedar Cliff and Wendy for Cedar Crest). Coming in third for the women was Masters runner Riva Johnson in 19:25 followed by 18-year-old Alastasia McDowell in 19:45.

Prize money was awarded to the top three men and women finishers as well as first male/female Masters runners. Age-group awards were sterling silver necklaces with a “Strength” pendant for the women. Male age-group winners were awarded “Run Strong” watches.

This year’s event was held in honor of Palmyra resident, and competitive runner, William F. Foran. Mr. Foran competed in several marathons, including the prestigious Boston Marathon. He was looking forward to retirement and spending time with his wife, Bernie, daughter Courtney, son Sean, and their six grandchildren. His goal was to continue competitive running, and to “beat the pavement.”

Mr. Foran was diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer following a routine colonoscopy. Given the advanced stage of disease, his expected survival was in months. Following his diagnosis, his life continued to be centered around his supportive family. He received multidisciplinary treatment at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. He continued to remain active, and competed in several running events with his family by his side. William Foran was determined to beat the odds and he did. With his strength, positive outlook, and determination, he survived an incredible six years following his diagnosis.

The race committee extends our gratitude to our generous sponsors: The Edward and Jeanne Arnold Foundation; The Hotel Hershey; Bristol-Myers Squibb; The Crimson Frog; M & M Mars; Giant Food Stores; Kramer and Ditty Family Dentistry; Wegmans; Rick and Cindy Blood; Panera Bread; and The Inside Track.

Thanks to all runners and walkers for their participation in this event. We are indebted to Bernie Foran and Courtney Delaney, as well as their extended family and friends for their support. A slideshow of the race is online at www.pennstatecolonandrectal.com, and we look forward to next year’s race.
