Great Weather for Edward Jones Race

BY NEAL RIEMENSCHNEIDER

Front Royal, VA--After a tough, tough winter, it was nice to run a race on a sunny cool day with no snow on the ground! This was the scenario on March 20 as the 3rd Annual Edward Jones 5K was held on the campus of Skyline High School (Go Hawks!).

The course began on the school track and made two loops around the campus before finishing back on the track. About 40% of the course was grass while the rest was pavement. Samuel Kilpela, a Michigan native, bolted to the lead at the gun and was never pressed hitting the finish tape in 17:17 a full minute ahead of second place finisher Chase Rexroat. “I help out with the cross-country team here so I knew the course very well and liked how flat it was,” stated the 24-year-old Skyline physics teacher. “I am very happy with my time and it was easy to follow the course, thanks to the course markings and all the volunteers.”

Women’s winner 15-year-old Kayla Gibbons also won big as her 20:35 finish time saw her beat runner-p Jessica Stockton by two minutes. “I run for Warren County HS (the other county school and Skyline’s arch rival) and I have run here before so I was able to follow the course very easily. I just wish it had some hills.”

There were 52 finishers in this event with proceeds from the race divided amongst the two high school cross-country teams and The Warren Coalition/College Access Network which helps to send first generation area students to college. And oh, to be young again…The top end of the age groups was 40 + and I was first in that age group which made me--r a moment anyway--el as if I were a spry 40-year-old…
