YORK, PA--Co-directors Karen Mitchell and Ray Ricke had over 250 people, despite rain, at the Double Deuce on New Year’s Eve--a record turnout. The course is two miles and starts downtown at 11:53 p.m. as part of the First Night New Year’s Eve celebration.

Awards are given to the top three men and women and the top three costumes. A clock is set at the finish but purposely no times are recorded in this for-fun-only event. Last year’s winners Brandon Bear, 19, of Hellam and Willow Street’s Justine Barr, 14, repeated as overall champs.

The men’s runners-up were Laszlo Orosz, 39, of Ontario, Canada and 19-year-old Jake Schrader of York.

Justine’s sister, Melanie, 14, was the women’s runner-up with Kimberly Leathers, 24, of Staten Island, NY taking third.

Last year’s costume winner, Dan VanHouwe, teamed up with wife Lynn--a.k.a. “Cleopatra”--Joe McMaster, and others to win the costume division. The “subjects” did a creditable 22-minute run carrying Cleopatra. The toilet and the tub (Addie Becker and Susan Tome) repeated in second place with a new theme, and the friendly “Shark” theme with sailors, swimmers, hula girl, etc. took third.

Nick Carney of York won the grand prize of the auto giveaway by Ricke Brothers Auto.
