Lewis, Jacaruso Grab Cookies
BY BILL BULL
BERWICK, PA--The Run for the Cookies 10K was held on the last Saturday of February as it has been for 34 years; since 1985. Runners have seen almost every type of weather possible at the race; from below-zero temperatures and snow to last years 60 degrees. This year the temperature was a comfortable 44 degrees. But the slight morning drizzle turned into a steady rain about twenty minutes into the race. Of the 200 entrants, a hearty 183 finished the race.
The hot soup, coffee, and hot dogs were a welcome treat back inside the Elks Lodge. Plenty of cookies for everyone made a great feast!
Brent Lewis took the lead soon after Dick Rimple fired the starter's pistol. He continued to increase his lead to win by almost a minute. Mickey Moorhead finished second and Bob Yonick rounded out the top three.
Alana Jacaruso was first female and fourth overall in a fine time of 38:44. She was followed by Katie Williams and Josey Rupert, second and third respectfully.
Some of the runners commented about this being their first 10K that they had run. Back in the 1980s 10K was the most run racing distance. Now it is rarely run. The 5K distance is the overwhelming favorite now.
The Berwick Marathon Association would like to thank all those
who donated soup for the race. Also thanks go to the Berwick
and Salem Township Fire Police and all the others who volunteered
to help with the race. Without volunteers, no race would be
