Peoples Sets Another Course Record at Cookies,
This Time in White-Out Conditions;
Wrong Turn by Lead Runner Gives Adams
Win in Men’s Race

BERWICK, PA--While the winter of 2011-12 has been mild and kind to runners, Cookie Run race day, February 25, was not.

Runners awoke to sunny skies, but about an hour before race time, a snow squall blew in and remained for the duration of the race. A near white-out occurred with strong, blowing winds. This made for some tough running; but a typical Cookie Run!

A lead pack of three (Kevin Borrelli, Jess Adams, and Jeffrey McCabe) were in control by the mile mark. By 2½ miles, Borrelli had established a comfortable lead. He steadily increased the lead throughout the second half of the race; until disaster struck. At 6.1 miles, Borrelli saw an Auxilary Policeman holding up his arm and Borrelli thought he was to turn, but the policeman was only stopping traffic. By the time Borrelli realized his error, it was too late to take back the lead. Jess Adams heard the frantic yells of the race director in the lead car and went on to victory! Jeffrey McCabe finished in a strong third place.

Heidi Peoples is becoming accustomed to running with the guys in local races. She easily won the Women’s Division. Heidi also was able to claim her second Course Record in Berwick, running an astounding (considering the conditions) time of 36:04. Heidi also owns the famed Run for The Diamonds Women’s Course Record. Samantha Snead finished as second woman (15th overall), duplicating last year's 1-2 finish. Former winner, Kelly Ciravolo, followed in third, 18th overall.

A total of 315 finished, which was the second biggest field. The field last year was 345.

The race committee would like to thank all the runners and volunteers for their participation. Also, thanks to all the donors of crocks of soup. Hot dogs were also served and, of course, cookies!
