Mild Weather Puts Spring into Runners’ Steps at Cookie Run

BY MARGARET LIVSEY & BILL BULL

BERWICK, PA--The 20th Annual Berwick Run for the Cookies 10K was run on February 28--a perfect day for running. Runners--who usually have cold, winter weather--ran in 50-degree sunshine. In a sure sign of Spring, a few men were even seen running shirtless; sort of the runners’ version of spotting the first robin in your backyard.

Chris Wadas of Wilkes-Barre and Gary Dennis of Gouldsboro battled for over two miles until Wadas pulled away on the one major hill for the win. Amy Rome of Dallas led from the gun to win by almost two minutes. Aimee Shebest of Williamsport finished second.

A record field of 244 finished the race. Runners were greeted on their return by the soup-kitchen ladies and the cookie girls. All you can eat soup, hot dogs, and, of course, cookies were served. Not bad for a $3 entry fee, $18 with a CoolMax long-sleeve shirt.

The Berwick Marathon Association would like to thank the Berwick Borough, the Berwick Auxiliary Police, and the Elks Club for their generous support. See you on Thanksgiving for the 95th Run for the Diamonds, the last Saturday of October 2004 for the Great Pumpkin 5K, or the last Saturday of February 2005 for more cookies.
