Berwick Cookie Run the Best Deal Around

BY MARGARET LIVSEY

BERWICK, PA--The Run for the Cookies 10K is always run on the last Saturday of February. It was a mild day, as evidenced by a few runners finishing shirtless. This day, combined with a mild winter, had runners eager to gauge their fitness level. As a result, a record field of 250 runners finished the race.

Matt Byrne, of Moosic, went out hard to win in an impressive time of 31:47. Matt Marcini held on as long as possible before finally settling for third place in 32:37. Masters runner Budd Coates, a Berwick fan favorite, ran strong through the hills to claim second in 32:28.

Laurie Parton traveled all of the way from Newton, NJ, to claim the victory in 38:41. Michelle Wolyniec ran a strong second in 39:01. Wendy Tedesco rounded out the top three in 41:33.

The first 150 entrants received a long-sleeved CoolMax shirt. All runners received at least one cookie. And all runners and friends enjoyed the great postrace party of soup, hot dogs, and the Elks Lodge's hospitality.

The Berwick Marathon Association would also like to thank SOAR (Scranton Organized Area Runners) for recognizing the Association with their presentation, by Jim Moran, of a plaque. The plaque read: "SOAR thanks the Berwick Marathon Association for their hard work, high standards, and hospitality in area road racing. February 2002"
