STEPHENS CITY, VA--The Shenandoah Valley Runners kicked off their annual Winter Series races with a Poker Run at Sherando Park. Held on December 2, all participants received a playing card when they started, when they finished, and at three points on the course. The runners with the best hands received prizes at the awards ceremony. The 8K course was 75% cross-country through the park that was well-marked by trail enthusiast Karsten Brown.

Jared Prunty and Ruth Riemenschnieder were the overall winners running 28:20 and 35:12, respectively. Both won by over a minute and each received some Christmas knick-knacks and a Sheetz coupon ("Welcome to Sheetz; pump 95 is on.") The top winners of the poker competition also won Sheetz coupons. Mark Vann snuck a Royal Straight Flush out of the deck after the race, but was disqualified. When asked why he should be DQed, everyone yelled out, "Because you are a lawyer!"

The top hands were Lynne Lawrence with a full house, Ruth with a flush, and Ercan Akkus with three of a kind. Ruth was so busy yakking that she didn't realize that she had such a good hand. Then again, Ruth's idea of card games is UNO and Go Fish!
