'Stormy Weather' at 37th Annual
BY CLAY SHAW
PHILADELPHIA, PA--The best of the Philly races, and there are a number of great runs. The Broad Street Run is 10 miles through the heart and soul of Philadelphia, from Olney Station in the north to the finish in the Navy Yard in the south. The 37th Annual, held Sunday, May 1, featured rain. It wasn't just a sprinkle, but a hard, cold, soaking uncomfortable rain. Wondering how to keep our cameras dry, yet still document the race. It was a bother, yes. Karen and I did okay. Noting that prior to the race, weather gal Cecily Tynan, could pull off looking good with a plastic poncho. Most of the 40,000 registrants hunkered down in whatever shelter they could find prior to the race. Once the race started the top runners took off maybe thinking of running fast and getting it done.
A huge men's pack stayed together for the early miles, and by halfway at City Hall it was down to two runners. Abebe Mekuria of Ethiopia who won in 48:43, and Mathew Kiplagat of Kenya who was second in 48:51. David Fuentes of Austin, TX, an Olympic Marathon Trials competitor was elated with third in 49:28. Brian Crispell of Media was first Masters in 54:19.
Crystal Burnick of Skippack PA was first overall woman in
57:07. Emily Giannotti of Ephrata PA was second in 57:54,
and Amanda Scott of Boulder, CO was third in 57:59. Abby
Dean of Philly was first women's Masters in 1:00:36.
